Deutz and Manitou cooperate on electrified demonstrator telehandlers. Seen in action at Bauma 2019.
It was very quiet at the Deutz booth in the outdoors exhibition area at Bauma 2019 trade show in Munich, Germany, despite two telehandler machines moving back and forth and shovelling piles of sand around.The reason for the almost complete absence of noise? One machine sported adiesel-electric hybrid drive, the other a full-electric drive system.
The two Manitou MT 1135 telehandlers in the conventional diesel version, are fitted with a Deutz TCD 3.6 engine. When the two companies decided to launch an electrification project for the same machine, the result was the two unconventional models seen in action in Munich.
The fully-electric Manitou MT 1135 telehandler is powered by a 60-kW electric motor in a 360-V system architecture and features a powerful battery with 30 kWh capacity. The other machine has been fitted with a diesel-electric hybrid drive, with a Deutz TCD 2.2 diesel engine which generates 55 kW output power and a 20-kW electric motor in a 48-V electric system.
These demonstrator vehicles are part of the E-Deutz strategy and are meant to show the performance of the electrified drive systems in actual working conditions. Michel Denis, president and CEO of Manitou Group, confirmed in a statement that the potential performance of these new electric drives is very compelling.
As the company’s E-Deutz strategy unfolds, Deutz announced that it plans to achieve between 5 and 10% of its overall sales revenue from electric drive systems by 2022.
