Engine unveilings were everywhere at the recent Agritechnica trade show in Hanover, Germany.
The farming festival attracted huge audiences to see the latest industry products and Diesel Progress was in the middle of the action.
MAN Engines took the wraps off the MAN D4276 – its new engine series for agricultural applications with a 142 mm bore and 170 mm stroke. Generating 581 kW from 16.2 L, MAN said it is the most powerful inline six-cylinder engine for agricultural machines that the company has ever developed and has the highest power-to-weight ratio in its displacement class. The engine has a maximum torque of 3,400 Nm between 1,350 min-1 and 1,600 min-1.
Yanmar showed the complete line-up of its diesel engines with attention given to the newest high-power industrial engines, the 55-155 kW 4TN101 and 4TN107. Introduced at Intermat 2018, the EU Stage 5 TN series were shown for the first time in its agricultural configuration complete with its after-treatment system, mounted on the 4TN101.
Cummins new structural 4-cylinder engine debuted at the show. The new engine is available with 3.8 L (F3.8) and 4.5 L (F4.5) displacements, complementing the 6-cylinder B6.7 structural launched at the previous Agritechnica. Signifying an extension to its agriculture line up, Cummins said its structural F3.8 and F4.5 engines provide four-cylinder options for tractors in the 67 – 149 kW power band. They are the company’s latest innovation for tractor applications and, alongside the six-cylinder B6.7 engine, expand Cummins structural product coverage from 67 to 243 kW.
John Deere Power Systems had a line-up of its Stage 5-certified engines including the 13.6 L industrial diesel engine designed for larger agricultural applications and rated for continuous, heavy-duty and intermittent applications from 300 to 510 kW at 2100 r/min.
Kubota brought is engine range to the show headed by the 5 L V5009 large-displacement engine, part of the 09 Series designed for larger agricultural, construction and materials handling machinery.
Rolls-Royce presented drive and power solutions for the agricultural market under its MTU brand saying that the spotlight was on the stage 5-certified MTU engines and microgrid solutions which, it said, combine renewable energy sources and battery storage systems with natural gas-powered gen-sets.
Perkins launched its second new compact engine – the Perkins Syncro 2.2 L– designed exclusively for tractors. The new Perkins Syncro 2.2 tractor engine gives up to 55 kW and 270 Nm of torque, while the Perkins Syncro 3.6 tractor engine – unveiled at EIMA 2018 – delivers 100 kW and up to 530 Nm of torque. Both engines meet EU Stage 5 and U.S. EPA Tier 4 final emission standards.
FPT Industrial showed its new NEF Series engines. The N45 and N67 engines have been redesigned from their previous versions for increased performance, which are now up to 152 kW on the N45 (+15%) and up to 264 kW on the N67 (+13%).
FPT Industrial and STEYR, CNH Industrial brands presented a new, jointly developed hybrid tractor concept. The companies said the new concept features innovative architecture, with a serial hybrid approach whereby the diesel engine, a compact 4.5 L 4-cylinder unit, instead of the 6-cylinder traditionally installed on such a tractor range, works at optimal speed as an energy generator, charging batteries. The engine is disconnected from the wheels, and traction is provided by four independent electric motors directly installed in the wheel hubs.
Kohler introduced a new smartphone app designed to provide monitoring and maintenance information for Kohler engines. Kohler Check App is engineered to provide a direct line between the end user and Kohler, providing the engine user general overview of the engine’s condition, characteristics and documentation, including video tutorials that show how to replace spare parts and user and maintenance handbooks.
At Agritechnica 2019 Volvo Penta also presented its next generation of Stage 5 engine solutions.
Massey Ferguson announced the introduction of the new MF 5700 M Series, which includes five models from 71 to 101 kW. All are powered by the latest AGCO Power four-cylinder engines, which meet the Stage 5 emissions regulations.
In non-engine news the headlines included Bosch Rexroth showcasing its intelligent vibration analysis solution IVAS. The compact sensor package delivers live information to help ensure increased machine availability in off-highway applications as well as in agricultural facilities and industrial plants, the company said. At this year´s Agritechnica ZF showed what it called “forward-looking
Solutions” for agriculture and sets the focus on Efficiency, Electrification
and Smart Farming.
Walterscheid Powertrain Group’s display at the show included the K65/6, a damper clutch for power outputs developing torque in excess of 3,000 Nm. The K65/6 is the first micro-sized damper clutch capable of delivering very high performance, the company claimed. It does not require any maintenance or lubricants, which helps operators to reduce costs.
Trelleborg Wheel Systems and Dana outlined the development of a central tire inflation system for the agricultural industry. The system will enable tractor drivers to inflate or deflate tire pressures directly from the tractor cabin, according to the recommended pressure calculated by Trelleborg Load Calculator software.
Italian drive company Bonfiglioli presented its new 711C2B track drive for sugar cane harvesters, with ratios of 1:47 and a motor adapter for a 100 cc/rev hydraulic motor. Together with the 711C2, the 709C2H gearbox with tapered roller bearings has also been designed for applications including sugarcane harvesters, where, the company said, sometimes, stronger bearings than spherical ones are specifically requested. It has a ratio equal to 1: 51.8 and a motor adapter for 80 cc/rev hydraulic motor.
