Caterpillar Inc. announced it is considering moving machine production out of its Aurora, Ill. operations to two other U.S. plants, a move that could relocate about 800 jobs.
The plan reportedly is to move production of large wheel loaders and compactors to Cat’s Decatur, Ill. plant, and medium wheel loader production to a facility in North Little Rock, Ark.
Cat said it plans to maintain an office in Aurora for engineering and product support work. Caterpillar’s current workforce in Aurora is about 2000 people, with 800 production employees and 1200 in engineering, product support and administrative roles.
A Caterpillar spokesman said about 500 jobs would be added to Decatur, 150 would move to North Little Rock, and about 90 would likely be moved to suppliers.
This latest announcement is in addition to the Cat’s global restructuring and cost savings plan announced in September 2015. A decision on the Aurora plant is expected engineering and product support late in the second quarter of 2017.
