Hybrids were one of the highlights of Perkins display at the massive Bauma exhibition, a display that also included the company’s Stage 5 engine range, as well as an expanded aftermarket portfolio. And, for the first time, Perkins had a stand separate from its engine booth, just for its aftermarket offerings.
But the hybrids attracted much of the attention. Three hybrid engine packages, developed by a newly-formed team, are hybrid-electric, hybrid-mechanical (pictured) and hybrid-hydraulic power technologies designed to complement Perkins existing 0.5 to 18-liter range of diesel engines.
Will covering the full line, at Bauma Perkins is highlighting three hybrid power solutions through three engines, all at 75 kW (100 hp). All three hybrid solutions are based on the Perkins Syncro 2.8-liter diesel.
First is hybrid-electric incorporating an electric motor or generator. Second, a hybrid-mechanical technology stores energy in a high-speed flywheel that can be delivered back to the machine. Perkins said this is particularly useful in hybridizing machines that run a cyclic operation and need bursts of additional power. Apart from a very quick energy release, Perkins said the advantage over hybrid-electric is in installation size.
The third technology shown is hybrid-hydraulic. This stores energy in hydraulic accumulators. In some machines this can be the most practical and cost-effective hybrid solution, Perkins said, as it integrates into existing machine hydraulic systems. Software and integration of machine systems are key to achieving great savings from this technology.
“For some machines and specific requirements such as mini excavators and compact wheeled loaders, full electrification of vehicles is already a practical commercial proposition,” said Matt Coleman, product director at Perkins. “It is possible to replace a diesel engine with lithium-ion batteries and an electric motor. However, the dynamics of the defining features such as battery durability, cost, recharging infrastructure and product support, do not immediately translate into an attractive fully electric proposition for all operators of construction machines.
To provide the close technical collaboration required to meet customers’ needs, Perkins has established a dedicated team – the Perkins Expanded Offering Product Team.
Stage 5 engines on display at Bauma start with the 1.7-liter mechanical Perkins 403J-17T which delivers 18.9 kW (25 hp). Offered with a choice of power ratings and speeds, Perkins said the 403J-17T provides higher power and 18 percent more torque.
Now in production, the new Perkins Syncro 3.6-liter engine produces 100 kW (134 hp) and has 3 dB less noise.
At the larger end of the Perkins range, the 1706J-E93TA is a six-cylinder, 9.3-liter engine providing 19 percent more power and improved torque up to 340 kW (456 hp) and 2088 Nm (1540 lb. ft).
Shown for the first time at Bauma, the 2406J-E13TA delivers 430 kW (577 hp) and 2634 Nm (1943 lb. ft.) torque from a 12.5-liter package.
Further, Perkins is showcasing a new four-cylinder 1204J, offering 120 kVA, and meeting the latest emission standards for mobile generators.
Finally, highlighting its aftersales expansion, Perkins is launching a range of solutions that ensure the DPF stays in perfect working order, including new, new-for-old and remanufactured options. All of these guarantee the DPF will operate to the same factory-fit standards as new for power, efficiency, and emissions. All Perkins DPF solutions include a full 12-month warranty.
